Paper Trading with Puthouse: Learn Before You Go Live

How free paper trading works on Puthouse, what you can practice safely, and when it makes sense to move from a simulated Alpaca account to live trading.

Trying options income for the first time should not feel like jumping into cold water.

Paper trading gives you a quiet practice lane: the same style of automation and trade explanations, on a simulated Alpaca account, without putting real capital at risk.

What paper trading means here

On Puthouse, the Free plan includes unlimited paper trading. No credit card is required.

You connect Alpaca, run on a simulated account, and watch how covered calls and cash-secured puts would be selected, entered, managed, and explained. It is a way to see the workflow before you decide whether live trading is right for you.

Paper is not a crystal ball. Markets change, and simulated fills are not identical to live ones. Still, it is one of the softest ways to learn the product.

What you can practice

While you are in paper, you can get comfortable with things that usually feel intimidating at first:

  • how opportunities are screened within rules
  • how strikes and expirations are chosen
  • what entries, exits, and adjustments look like
  • how AI explanations describe the “why” behind a trade
  • how notifications show up when something happens

You can also get a feel for pacing. Options income strategies are not meant to feel like day trading. Paper helps you notice that rhythm without pressure.

What paper does not remove

Paper trading lowers financial risk. It does not remove learning risk.

  • You can still misunderstand assignment, position sizing, or why a trade was skipped.
  • Simulated results can look cleaner than live trading, especially around liquidity and slippage.
  • Comfort in paper does not guarantee comfort or results with real money.

Use paper as a dress rehearsal, not as proof that future returns are locked in.

A gentle path from paper to live

A simple sequence many people follow:

  1. Sign up and connect Alpaca. Opening an account is typically quick, and Alpaca is commission-free.
  2. Stay in paper first. Watch a stretch of trades and read the explanations.
  3. Ask calm questions. Do you understand why trades opened or closed? Do the guardrails make sense to you?
  4. Upgrade only when ready. Live trading requires a paid plan (Pro or Max). You can cancel from account settings anytime, with access through the end of your billing period.

If you want the product tour first, start with What Is Puthouse? or the Features page. For plan details, see Pricing.

Tips for getting more from paper

  • Check in regularly, but do not treat it like a second job. The point of automation is that you should not need to stare at charts all day.
  • Read the trade explanations even when a result looks “boring.” Boring is often the design.
  • Notice skips as much as fills. Guardrails sometimes mean not trading, and that is intentional.
  • Practice pausing. Knowing you can stop new trades with one click makes the whole experience feel safer on paper and later live.

When paper is enough for now

It is okay to stay in paper longer than you expected.

There is no prize for rushing to live capital.

Risk disclosure: Paper trading is educational and simulated. It does not guarantee future live results. Options trading involves substantial risk and is not suitable for all investors. Automation does not eliminate market risk.
